The East Side Education Foundation was founded in 2009 to provide support and enhance extracurricular, educational, and athletic opportunities for students in East San José, California. In collaboration with the Education Foundation, he East Side Union High School District memorializes members of the Thomas P. Ryan Hall of Fame in an honorary association to publicize and honor the outstanding achievements of our graduates.
We aim to inspire students within the spirit and memory of Thomas P. Ryan, the founding superintendent of the East Side Union High School District. Established in 1972, the Thomas Ryan Hall of Fame has as its dual purpose the reinforcement of respect for excellence and the expression of admiration for graduates who have achieved notable success.
Created, nurtured, and expanded primarily through the efforts of the late Mr. Frank Burrows, for thirty-one years an East Side math teacher and later Subject Area Coordinator, the Hall of Fame was originally formed to serve as a counterbalance to the constant harsh criticism aimed during the late 1960s at society in general and at the educational systems in particular. This counterbalance was based on the premise that the person who had striven resolutely for achievement, whatever his area of concentration, could still serve as an inspiration for young people. Today, as in the late 60s, there is still an obvious need to show the students and the community that today's schools indeed can instill a respect for hard work and for excellence.
