Pattie Cortese has lived in the Bay Area since 1969. She graduated from Lynbrook High School in San Jose and attended De Anza College for two years before transferring to San Jose State University, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Therapy.  She also holds a Master of Divinity in Interfaith Studies from the Center for Spiritual Enlightenment in San Jose.  
 
Professionally, she began her career with Catholic Charities in their Vocational Learning and Treatment Center, working with chronically mentally ill adults to gain skills and employment.  In 1990, she joined a high-tech laser and optics start-up, which eventually went public, where she worked in customer service, facilities management, and human resources for nearly ten years.
 
Pattie has served on the ESUHSD Board of Trustees since 2015. She presently also serves on the board of Pivotal, a local nonprofit that supports students in the foster care system in graduating from high school and college. Additionally, she has been involved in a number of volunteer community activities, including:
 
  • Bright Futures/ConXión to Community, mentor trainer
  • California Community Partners for Youth, volunteer, and advisory board member
  • St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, youth and adult spirituality leader
  • Restorative Justice Council for the Diocese of San Jose, board member
  • Pax Christi East San Jose, member 
  • Juvenile Hall Flower Program, volunteer coordinator
  • Carry The Vision Community Nonviolence Conference, past event manager and youth program coordinator
  • Santa Clara County Restorative Justice Program, volunteer area coordinator
  • Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County, troop leader
 
She is married to Senator Dave Cortese and has two children and two stepchildren who are all adults.
