BigBook
A very interesting online yellow pages, this site allows you to search for businesses by company name, category, city, or state and lets you create your own yellow pages of favorites.

Bureau of Economic Analysis
BEA, an agency of the Department of Commerce, is "the Nation's accountant". This agency produces and compiles economic, business cycle, and labor market data, and offers current information and articles on the state of U.S. business.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
This is a great resource for U.S. labor market and economic analysis, as well as human resources development planning.

Business News Americas
"Latin America's Business News Leader" offers mining, energy, telecommunications, privatization, and infrastructure news, plus archives. This started as a free service in May, 1996, but is now subscription-based. You can get a free trial in order to decide if it's a good investment for you.

A Business Researcher's Interests

The Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval (EDGAR) system performs automated collection and forwarding of submissions by companies required to file forms with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC makes this database of time-sensitive information available to investors and companies in an effort to benefit the economy.

The Economist
This experimental home page of The Economist, "the international weekly journal of news, ideas, opinion and analysis," offers selected articles and surveys. You can also arrange for a free e-mail subscription to their "Business This Week" and "Politics This Week" columns.

Fairplay
This online shipping magazine offers a searchable database (which can be accessed by vessel name or by company). There are daily news updates and information and some products for sale online.

Fast Company
Billed as "the handbook of the business revolution", Fast Company focuses on the changing business models for competition, product and service development, and more. Case studies of how the top teams are changing the way they work and the way they think to invent the future.

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis
Business, financial, and labor market information is available here, as well as FRED, the historical economic database, and the Beige Book, summary of current economic conditions. There are also links to other Federal Reserve sites and to a number of domestic and international business sites of interest.

Hoover's Online and EDGAR Online bring you this information on companies in the process of going public. Size of share issue, expected price, company descriptions, and performances by similar companies are just a few of the things you can research here.

Inc. Online
The online version of this hot magazine for entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial companies features the publication's current issue as well as archives of past issues. Merrill Lynch has put together some interesting information regarding investing, business planning, and personal finance. In the personal finance area there is information about saving for college. In the business planning area there is a financial plan guide and business life cycle guide. Useful stuff.

"The stock market for the next hundred years" offers statistics, graphs, and more.

Planetary News
An online consultant uses this site as his home base, and he offers his regular columns on a number of issues relating to publishing and news services, and how the Internet impacts them and provides them with new opportunities...and challenges. There are a lot of links to examples of online newspapers and magazines as well as some discussion lists. Very informative site for those in the news and publishing businesses.

Quote.com provides financial market data, including current quotes on stocks, options, commodity futures, mutual funds, and bonds. Some is free, some not. One neat feature is the stock price alarms via e-mail service.

Reuters MoneyNet.com
This site carries the latest stock market and business information in a format that's attractive and easy to use. Real Time Quotes are subscription-based, but you can get free delayed quotes and excellent free features such as a Portfolio Tracker service and a customized Market Snapshort page.

Science, Industry and Business Library
This is part of The New York Public Library and is the largest public information center exclusively devoted to science and business. To keep from getting overwhelmed and hopelessly lost (though the site is well organized), we'd recommend taking the virtual tour to get oriented.

Social Security Online
This is the US Social Security Administration's official web site. If you're seeking answers, you can find them in their Frequently Asked Questions section or try their search engine, courtesy of Excite. Facts, forms, history, laws, and more are available here, in both English and Spanish.

Standard Industrial Classifications (SIC) Index
The complete online listing of all standard industrial classification codes and category descriptions. A great quick reference. Information on CD-ROM or diskette can be purchased, but the Web site is free.

Standard & Poor's Equity Investor Services
This service provides stock market news and commentary, research, top stock picks, and S&P 500 Index statistics.

Thomas Register
The online version of this print and CD-ROM directory of US company information. The site does ask you to register, but after that provides free access to their extensive online database.

Trade Easy
Encouraging companies to use the Internet as "a powerful tool for delivering their product information to buyers," Trade Easy is an international effort to match buyers and sellers, currently offering 30,000 companies in 40 countries, free.

United States Department of Labor
This site provides information from the Employment and Training Administration (ETA); the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS); and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as well as other DOL departments and programs.

The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition
Articles from the Journal are available here, plus continuously updated business news from the U.S. and around the world. You can get two weeks free, then subscribe online if you wish. The site also offers a personal stock tracking portfolio that's pretty cool.

The Web 100
The largest US and international corporations on the Web are indexed here. Articles about online marketing and advertising make this a great resource for netrepreneurs.
