Application can be obtained from the guidance/counseling office at the school site your child attends and will be available in the first week of March 2009. The application can also be downloaded by clicking the link below. The last day for registering for general summer school is April 15, 2009.

General Information
Our thirty-day general summer school program begins June 18, ends July 30, 2009 and will be available again for students in grades 9-12. Friday, July 3rd will be a non-school day. The first semester starts on June 18, 2009 and ends on July 9, 2009 and the second semester starts on July 10, 2009 and ends on July 30, 2009 . The general summer school includes: Make-up classes for 9th grade students at risk of being retained in the 9th grade, special classes for students in danger of failing the High School Exit Exam, Classes for 11th and 12th grade students who have failed subjects needed for graduation Enrichment for those students who are in a Magnet, Academy and other special programs, such as AVID and Puente students who need to take extra elective classes during the school year required by those program models and for certain students in Special Education. | | 1. ELL Summer School 2009 The goal is to increase the English skills of our ELL students in reading, speaking and writing to a level sufficient to pass the CELDT assessment at the proficient and/or advanced levels. The extra support that summer school can provide will help students become more successful in the core curriculum classes preventing them from falling behind in meeting the graduation requirements.
2. Enrichment 2009 Each school will receive student slots equaling 4% of their CBED’s enrollment, as of October 2007. There will be approximately 1000 slots district wide. These classes are to be used by magnet, academy and other special programs, such as AVID and Puente students who need to take extra elective classes during the school year required by those program models. Other students can apply on a space available basis. The school site will make the decision as to whom will be admitted based on student need and space availability.
3. Make-up Classes 2009 Make up courses are for those students who have failed classes and need to make them up in order to graduate.
4. Special Education 2009 Special Education classes will be held for Low Functioning (LF) students and for Special Day Class (SDC) students whose Individual Educational Plan (IEP) call for extended year services. The RSP or mainstreamed students can attend the regular make-up summer school program if needed.
5. Migrant Education 2009 Supplemental counseling, tutoring and additional credit recovery will be available for all migrant education students registered in summer school. The summer school sites include Evergreen, Independence, James Lick, Silver Creek, Yerba Buena, and OakGroveHigh School. 6. The Valdes Project 2009 The Valdes Summer Math Institute will be available to students from our feeder schools who are currently in 6th and 7th grades. The operation of this project is a cooperative effort among feeder school districts and East SideUnionHighSchool District. The goals of the program are to prepare students for Algebra 1 enrollment upon entering high school, reduce the risk of students dropping out of school, and guarantee success in a major academic discipline. This project will be housed at various local colleges and universities.
Applications can be obtained from your local school or by going to the Valdes office located at Andrew Hill HIgh School – 3200 Senter Road, San Jose, CA. You can contact the Valdes office at (408) 347-4272. There will be a cost of $100 to cover transportation costs.
7. Language Arts/Math Summer Institute 2009 (application) The goal of this program is to prepare incoming students for classes in Algebra 1 and English 1. Key components of the program are classes of 40 students per class [20 to 1 ratio student to teacher] team-taught by two teachers using an integrated Algebra/English curriculum with common goals and practices. Each team consists of a teacher currently teaching in the East SideUnionHighSchool District and one teacher from a surrounding middle school.
The focus of this program is to get students who are below grade level in reading, writing, or math skills ready to enter high school and be successful in their 9th grade Algebra 1 and English classes. Students will earn 10 elective credits (5 English, 5 Math) when completing the Institute. Free busing will be provided from some middle schools to the designated high school. Mathematics • Students will review previous topics, looking at them in new ways to help build the understanding necessary for their success in Algebra 1. • Students will learn strategies that will help them become better problem solvers and hence be better prepared for Algebra 1. Language Arts • Students will learn useful reading sklls to help them pass the High School Exit Examination and to be more successful in core content classes. •Students will practice writing and editing skills necessary to pass the High School Exit Examination. •Students will be introduced to major works of literature in the English 1 curriculum. 8. CAHSEE SUMMER TESTING 2009 All current 11th graders and non-grad seniors who have not passed either or both of the CAHSEE tests will have another opportunity to take the tests this summer. Seniors who are planning to graduate in 2010 who have not passed the CAHSEE are allowed three testing opportunities. This July testing is the first of the three opportunities. Students who have not graduated solely due to the CAHSEE may take the test at Yerba Buena High School. Students are responsible for their own transportation to the testing location. STUDENTS MUST BRING A PICTURE I.D. CARD TO BE ADMITTED. PLEASE NOTE: STUDENTS ARRIVING AFTER THE 9:00 A.M. START TIME WILL NOT BE ADMITTED. CAHSEE Intervention classes 2009: To help students sharpen their skills for the exams, CAHSEE intervention support classes are offered during summer school. These intervention classes will be open to any current 11th grader and 12th grader who has not passed any portion of the CAHSEE. Any student planning to test in July should attend these classes.
