Dear Staff and Friends of East Side Union High School District,
 
 
The California Department of Education released its CAASPP results this month. The CAASPP are from the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The CAASPP replaced the former California Standard Test (CST) during the 2014-15 school year. The 2015-16 school year marked the second year that students took the SBAC in English Language Arts and Math. The 2014-15 results established the new baseline for performance and trends. Tests include performance tasks that challenge students to demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving, and to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world problems.
 
The following is an executive summary of the CAASPP scores from Spring 2015 for East Side Union High School District and 5 demographically comparable districts (Sweetwater Union, Antelope Valley, Kern Union, Oxnard Union, Anaheim Union).
 
ESUHSD Key Highlights and Trends:
  • ESUHSD had a higher percentage of 11th grade students scoring "meeting or exceeding standard" in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math (2016 vs 2015)
  • 30% of 11th graders scored "college ready" in ELA
  • 63% of students met or exceeded the standard in ELA (+3% vs 2015)
  • 19% of 11th graders scored "college ready" in Math 
  • 40% of students met or exceeded the standard in Math (+1% vs 2015)
  • Comparable Districts: ESUHSD had a higher percentage of students "meeting or exceeding standard" than the 5 comparable districts in both ELA and Math  
 
 
To help streamline student performance goals, the District has developed the Graduate Profile, a document to support ESUHSD's efforts to implement their strategic plan and realize their mission and expectations for all students. This incorporates the District's core values, state standards, state assessment frameworks, and the 5 C's for students as Communicators, Critical Thinkers, Collaborators, Creators and Community Members.
 
We are pleased with the uptrends in the 2016 CAASPP results and are very proud of our students, but we know that there's still work to be done to reach a higher level of college and career-ready students.  The Graduate Profile is an extension of our efforts to align our core values with student performance results.
