Summer School ProgramsTop of Page

1.         ELL Summer School
The goal is to increase the English skills of our ELL students in reading, speaking and writing to a level sufficient to pass the CELDT assessment at the proficient and/or advanced levels.  The extra support that summer school can provide will help students become more successful in the core curriculum classes preventing them from falling behind in meeting the graduation requirements.

2.         Enrichment
Each school will receive student slots equaling 4% of their CBED’s enrollment, as of October 2007. There will be approximately 1000 slots district wide.  These classes are to be used by magnet, academy and other special programs, such as AVID and Puente students who need to take extra elective classes during the school year required by those program models.  Other students can apply on a space available basis. The school site will make the decision as to whom will be admitted based on student need and space availability.

3.         Make-up Classes
Make up courses are for those students who have failed  classes and need to make them up in order to graduate.

4.         Special Education
Special Education classes will be held for Low Functioning (LF) students and for Special Day Class (SDC) students whose Individual Educational Plan (IEP) call for extended year services.  The RSP or mainstreamed students can attend the regular make-up summer school program if needed.

5.         Migrant Education
A morning and afternoon session will offer credit recovery and enrichment courses in multiple subjects from June 21st to August 2.  The summer sites include; Andrew Hill, Foothill, Mt Pleasant, Piedmont Hills, Santa Teresa, Silver Creek and Overfelt. All migrant students that complete a summer program will be able to receive recognition.  For more information please call Maria Arce at 347-5083, Esperanza Jimenez 347-5136, OR Robert Ibarra 347-5303

The goals of the program are to prepare students for Algebra 1 enrollment upon entering high school, reduce the risk of students dropping out of school, and guarantee success in a major academic discipline.  This project will be housed at various local colleges and universities.

Applications can be obtained from your local school or by going to the Valdes office located at Andrew Hill HIgh School – 3200 Senter Road, San Jose, CA. You can contact the Valdes office at (408) 347-4272. There will be a cost of $100 to cover transportation costs.

7. Language Arts/Math Summer Institute 2008

Each team consists of a teacher currently teaching in the East SideUnionHighSchool District and one teacher from a surrounding middle school.

The focus of this program is to get students who are below grade level in reading,
writing, or math skills ready to enter high school and be successful in their 9th grade Algebra 1 and English classes.  Students will earn 10 elective credits (5 English, 5 Math) when completing the Institute.   Free busing will be provided from some middle schools to the designated high school.
