CLAD Information

CLAD Options

CLAD OptionsTop of Page

If you need CLAD (Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development) certification you have many options depending on when you were hired and what your credential requires. When it comes to credential issues and which option(s) is correct for you, remember to listen only to a credential analyst. In our district, this would be personnel in the Human Resources office. See list of H.R. staff at:
http://www.esuhsd.org/Human_Resources/Staff.html

Professional Development Options:
(Remember, the final word can only come from a credential analyst)

1.  If you are a new teacher in the BTSA program, your CLAD requirement is imbedded in the induction program.

2. If you are a teacher with permanent status in a California school since January 1, 1999, you may be eligible for the AB2913 training. This training is offered free to you by our district and consists of classes, a portfolio and a written assessment. Or, you may choose to take one of the many university courses to fulfill this requirement; the plus side being you can earn salary-enhancing units; the negative is that you pay for the courses. (Talk to a credential analyst in our district to find out if you are eligible.) The last AB2913 cohort (seven cohorts were offered in the last 16 months) ended in December 2007.

3. If you are a teacher in the parenthesis period between the AB2913 eligibility requirement described above and the BTSA induction program, you may be eligible to complete the CLAD requirement by choosing one of the following:

a) Sign up for one of the many CTEL test preparation courses and take the test. Our district will reimburse the classes and the test. Please send your receipts attached to a reimbursement form to Robert Ibarra at our district office. See link below for a schedule of CTEL test preparation courses coming in June and July at the Santa Clara County Office of Education.

or

b) You may choose to take one of the many university courses to fulfill this requirement, the plus side being you earn salary-enhancing units; the negative is that you pay for the courses. Many teachers have taken the University of San Diego courses either online or at a nearby satellite campus. See http://www.usd-online.org for more information. If you chose this option, remember that the CTC requires that all course work has to be completed by January 31, 2008.  Click here for new guidelines and regulations effective 2008!

UCLA also has an online extension program you may want to check out. http://www.uclaextension.edu

Below are comments from an East Side teacher who just completed the online class through USD. Feel free to contact Robin via e-mail at edwardsr@esuhsd.org

"This is a great resource for those who need to pass the test or take the CLAD classes. I took all four this summer and enjoyed the classes greatly. You do need to do some work and the majority of it is reading online articles and the standard CLAD book. Unlike other at-home CLAD classes you only need the one CLAD book for all four and there are no videos to purchase. The price is also a great deal for teachers. USD gives a CTA/NEA discount for all classes of $75.00. The cost for each class was 450.00 This is also considerably cheaper than the other options. In addition, you will be earning units that can move you over on the pay scale so for younger teachers this is a great opportunity to increase your earnings over time.

There is no large 4 hour test to take and no large project to do. There are smaller projects which take some time, but not much time to complete. You also communicate with teachers from other schools across the country and exchange ideals about your classroom teaching instruction. If given the option between the test/project or the classes online, I would strongly recommend that teachers consider completing their CLAD credential through onlinelearning.net. Below, I have included a link for more information and frequently asked questions about the CLAD program they offer.
