Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. John Rubio started his career in education as a Teach for America (TFA) teacher in 1992 in the city of Compton, and also in South Central, Los Angeles at a K-12 School as a secondary teacher immediately after the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
He also worked with the non-profit Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP) during the 1990’s LEARN educational reform movement in Los Angeles as the lead representative to LAUSD, to United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), and to UCLA, where he received his doctoral degree.
He began his administrative career serving briefly as one of four Assistant Principals at Santa Monica High School, while also serving as an academic coach for the district, and in 1998 he was recruited by San Francisco Unified based on the recommendation of the founder of the Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem, and author of Nothing’s Impossible, Dr. Lorraine Monroe.
Dr. John Rubio has served as a high school, middle school and elementary school administrator, as the leader for educational technology for all of San Francisco Unified where he supported over 100 principals, as an Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services and Curriculum, and most recently as superintendent at Emery Unified School District.
At Emery, he spent the last four years as the lead district negotiator, and collaborator, with CTA and CSEA in his role as Superintendent, and has extensive experience in legal and Human Resources issues.
“I’m very excited to get started as soon as I can so I can get to know and support the great work of the East Side Union district staff, and look forward to supporting all of the employees in East Side Union,” said Dr. Rubio.
Dr. Rubio will be joining the East Side Union High School District team on July 1, 2018. We are excited to have him as part of the East Side family.
