Patricia Martinez-Roach is an alumni of Wm. C. Overfelt High School.  She attended San Jose State University where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Art, minor in Political Science, and a Masters Degree.  She also holds an Elementary Teaching Credential and is a Certified Interpreter by the State of California.
 
Ms. Martinez-Roach has been a school teacher for 34 years.  She is driven to provide quality education for her students and to many others. San Jose Chamber of Commerce Past President Steve Tedesco, after a day shadowing the Principal of Los Arboles School, had this to say: "Patricia Roach is a wonderful kindergarten teacher who coped well with a class of kids who speak five languages at home."  (San Jose Mercury News, March 24, 1992)
 
She has 21 years of experience as an elected official; nine years as a past member of the Alum Rock School District and twelve years for the East Side Union High School Board of Trustees.  She also served four years as a Member of the Metropolitan Adult Education/ROP/CCOC Board of Trustees.
 
She has worked closely with the high school students of the East Side Union High School District’s Student/Board Relations Committee to help set policies for East Side.  She has an extensive background in setting policies and procedures to ensure a quality education for over 40,000 students in both high school and adult education campuses. She is past budget chair overseeing almost a billion-dollar budget.

East/Evergreen San Jose has been Ms. Martinez-Roach's home since 1966. As a single parent of two sons, she became involved in the quest for quality education. She wants her eleven-year-old grandson to grow up in safe neighborhoods and attend good schools. She has joined organizations, which advocate for better parks, good libraries, and childcare, senior services affordable housing and more public safety programs for all residents. She has volunteered on many neighborhood associations including the West Evergreen Strong Neighborhood Initiative sponsored by the City of San Jose.
 
Ms. Martinez-Roach’s community involvement and credentials have been so impressive that in 1989, Assemblyman (now retired Senator) John Vasconcellos nominated her the 23rd District's "Woman of the Year." "She is an outstanding example of the best California has to offer," he said. Patricia was subsequently honored with this distinctive award by the California State Legislature. The California Association for Bilingual Education, San Jose Chapter voted her Bilingual Teacher of the Year for 1998-99. The Vietnamese Parent Association at East Side honored her support in 1998.
